Poverty: A Threat to Child Rights in India
Poverty is a condition that endangers millions of children across India, putting them at risk for a variety of issues such as poor health, malnutrition, child labor, and child marriage. These challenges are deeply intertwined with the lack of access to basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing. The adverse effects of poverty extend far beyond physical deprivation, threatening every fundamental child right: survival, development, and protection.
Poverty exacerbates existing economic, social, cultural, and gender disparities. Children living in poverty face a relentless cycle that perpetuates itself: poor children often grow up to become poor adults who then pass on their economic struggles to the next generation. This cycle of poverty is particularly harsh on children, impacting their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual development in ways that differ significantly from adults.
Understanding Child Poverty
UNICEF defines child poverty as the deprivation of material, spiritual, and emotional resources necessary for a child's survival, development, and ability to thrive. This deprivation prevents children from enjoying their rights, achieving their full potential, and participating as full and equal members of society.
A study conducted by UNICEF identified seven critical areas where children experience severe deprivation: adequate nutrition, safe drinking water, decent sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education, and access to information. The study found that half of the world's child population suffers from at least one form of deprivation. Furthermore, these deprivations are often interconnected. For instance, the lack of safe drinking water can adversely affect a child's health, education, and nutrition, creating a compounded effect that further entrenches poverty.
Global and National Perspectives on Child Poverty
Child poverty is not exclusive to low-income countries; it is also prevalent in many middle-income nations. For example, despite similar per-capita incomes, children in Namibia face more severe deprivations than those in Colombia, with conditions comparable to much poorer countries like Togo. Child poverty is also closely linked to gender discrimination, as the distribution of income and resources within families and society often reflects existing power dynamics between men and women.
Children in poverty experience more than just material deprivation. The lack of material security makes them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, pushing them into child labor and depriving them of their right to education and recreation. This exposure creates emotional and mental poverty, which in turn reinforces material poverty, perpetuating the cycle across generations.
Measuring Poverty: Global and Indian Perspectives
The World Bank provides a widely recognized estimation of poverty, with 1.4 billion people living below the poverty line in 2005. In 2008, the World Bank set the poverty line at $1.25 a day, using 2005 Purchasing Power Parity terms and price data from the International Comparison Program. This figure is based on the average national poverty lines of various poor countries.
In India, the poverty line is determined by the Planning Commission for the purpose of centrally sponsored programs in rural and urban areas. The Tenth Five Year Plan calculated the poverty line using thirteen parameters, each scored from 0 to 4. Families with a total score below 15 out of 52 are considered below the Poverty Line (BPL). These parameters include land holding, type of house, clothing, food security, sanitation, consumer durables, literacy status, labor force, means of livelihood, status of children, type of indebtedness, and reasons for migration.
In urban areas, poverty is assessed using seven parameters: roof type, floor type, water access, sanitation facilities, education level, type of employment, and status of children in the household. The 2004 survey identified 1.25 lakh urban poor families living below the poverty line. State governments use their criteria for BPL calculations for state-specific schemes.
The Way Forward
Addressing child poverty in India requires a multi-faceted approach that includes improving access to basic necessities, enhancing educational opportunities, and ensuring the protection of child rights. Efforts must focus on breaking the generational cycle of poverty and providing children with the resources they need to thrive.
By addressing these critical issues, we can work towards a future where every child in India has the opportunity to reach their full potential, free from the debilitating effects of poverty.

Strengthening Women's Power: Reflections on the Kolkata Doctor Rape Case
Jyoti Dubey, Kalaster Education
Date: August 23, 2024
Introduction
The Kolkata doctor rape case has sparked outrage and ignited conversations across the country about women’s safety, justice, and the urgent need for systemic change. As we reflect on this tragic event, it’s crucial to foster a collective effort toward empowering women and ensuring their safety in every sphere of life.
The Incident
The horrific incident involved a young female doctor in Kolkata, who was assaulted in a place where she should have felt safe. This act of violence was not just an attack on one individual; it was an assault on every woman’s right to live with dignity and without fear. The brutality of the crime has left the nation in shock, and it has highlighted the pervasive issue of violence against women in our society.
The Broader Issue
Unfortunately, the Kolkata doctor rape case is not an isolated incident. It reflects a deeper, systemic problem where women’s safety is frequently compromised. Despite numerous laws and regulations, crimes against women remain alarmingly high in India. These incidents underscore the urgent need for societal change, stricter law enforcement, and better support systems for survivors.
Fostering Women's Power
At Kalaster Education, we believe in fostering women’s power by promoting education, awareness, and empowerment. Here are some ways we can all contribute to strengthening the power and safety of women in our society:
Education and Awareness: Educating both men and women about gender equality and mutual respect is fundamental. Awareness programs that focus on consent, respect, and gender sensitivity can help break down stereotypes and foster a culture of respect and equality.
Empowerment and Support: Women must be empowered to speak out against injustice and violence. Support systems, including helplines, counseling services, and legal aid, should be readily available to ensure that victims are not alone in their fight for justice.
Strengthening Legal Frameworks: There is a critical need for stricter laws and swift justice to deter crimes against women. The judicial system must be responsive and sensitive to the needs of survivors, ensuring that justice is not delayed.
Community Involvement: Change begins at the grassroots level. Communities need to be involved in creating a safe environment for women. This includes initiatives such as neighborhood watch programs, self-defense workshops, and creating safe spaces for women to report incidents without fear of stigma.
Encouraging Leadership: Women should be encouraged to take up leadership roles in all fields, including education, healthcare, politics, and business. Empowering women to lead can inspire others and bring about significant cultural and societal change.
Conclusion
The Kolkata doctor rape case serves as a grim reminder of the challenges women face daily. However, it also presents an opportunity for all of us to unite and take action toward a safer, more equitable society. At Kalaster Education, we are committed to fostering an environment where women can thrive, free from fear and discrimination.
Let us work together to strengthen women’s power and build a world where every woman can live with dignity, respect, and safety.
With solidarity and determination,

By Rudransh Dubey, Kalaster Education
Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is a festival that holds a powerful message for everyone, especially for children. It marks the victory of good over evil, teaching us valuable lessons about courage, wisdom, and personal growth. Let’s explore how Dussehra can inspire young minds to build positive qualities and empower themselves.
Dussehra celebrates the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, who symbolizes ego, anger, and greed. Ravana had immense power, but his negative traits led to his downfall. Lord Rama's journey teaches children the importance of virtues like patience, kindness, and truth.
The story of Dussehra is not just about a battle but about defeating the negativity within ourselves. Children can learn that true strength comes from within. By controlling their anger, being truthful, and showing kindness, they can become stronger, more confident, and better people.
Every child faces challenges, whether in studies, friendships, or daily life. Dussehra reminds them that with courage and determination, they can overcome any difficulty. Like Lord Rama, who faced various challenges with bravery, children too can face their fears and come out victorious.
Ravana was knowledgeable, but he lacked wisdom. Dussehra teaches children to use knowledge in a positive way, always seeking to grow and help others. At Kalaster Education, we encourage students to learn with purpose and to apply their knowledge wisely, helping them become future leaders.
Every day, children have to make choices. Dussehra inspires them to choose kindness, honesty, and compassion over selfishness or anger. These choices build character and help them develop into strong, positive individuals.
Dussehra is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of inner strength, courage, and wisdom. By understanding its meaning, children can develop the qualities needed to face life with confidence and positivity. Let us celebrate this Dussehra by inspiring children to be the best versions of themselves!
Let this Dussehra empower our young minds to lead with kindness and courage, paving the way for a brighter future.

Govardhan Puja – Embracing Nature's Power and Protection
Date: 2 November 2024
By Krishna Kumar Dubey, Kalaster Education
Govardhan Puja, celebrated the day after Diwali, honors the strength of nature and reminds us of our duty to protect the environment. It commemorates the legend of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect the people of Vrindavan from destructive rains, symbolizing unity, courage, and respect for nature. Through this festival, children learn valuable lessons about resilience, kindness, and environmental responsibility.
Govardhan Puja celebrates Lord Krishna's act of lifting the Govardhan Hill on his little finger to shield the people and animals of Vrindavan from the heavy rains sent by Lord Indra, the god of rain. The villagers had been performing a ritual to honor Indra, but Krishna showed them that it was the hill, a natural resource, that provided them with food and shelter, and it deserved their gratitude. This act teaches us the importance of recognizing and protecting the natural world.
Govardhan Puja highlights the importance of appreciating and protecting nature. By offering food and flowers to the Govardhan Hill, people express their gratitude for the earth’s resources, such as food, water, and shelter. Children can learn the value of the environment and the importance of taking care of it, which is crucial for our well-being and the future of our planet.
The story of Govardhan Puja also teaches the strength of unity. When Lord Krishna lifted the hill, the villagers and animals gathered under its protection, symbolizing the power of working together for a common cause. This encourages children to understand the importance of community, cooperation, and helping one another in times of need.
Govardhan Puja demonstrates resilience in the face of adversity. Lord Krishna’s action of lifting the mountain was a display of strength and determination to protect his people. It teaches children that with courage and unity, they can overcome any challenges that come their way.
This festival encourages children to be mindful of their surroundings and to take steps toward protecting nature. By respecting and caring for the environment, children can contribute to a healthier world for future generations.
Govardhan Puja is more than just a religious festival—it’s a celebration of the earth’s power and the need to protect it. Through the story of Lord Krishna and the Govardhan Hill, children are inspired to respect nature, build resilience, and work together for the greater good. Let this Govardhan Puja be a reminder to embrace our responsibility as caretakers of the planet.
